Cape Town prayer warriors gather in ‘surprising’ force

Prayer leaders in Cape Town are encouraged by a stronger than expected response to a recent call to prayer warriors in the city to join in a united prayer gathering around the themes of unity and 24/7 prayer for revival.

A venue at the Lighthouse Family Church in Parow that can accommodate about 400 people was booked for the united prayer gathering on July 5.

“But the Lord wanted to do something in our day that even if we were told of it we would not believe it! (Hababkuk 1:5) We had over double the number and the Lighthouse Church Leadership graciously moved us to a larger hall! Grace, Grace, Grace!” says Maditshaba Moloko, a member of the working committee that helped facilitate the gathering.

“The working committee is now looking at ways to ensure that there is a united response by the different prayer ministries in the City to ensure that there are watchmen on the walls of the City of Cape Town praying day and night (“247 Watch”)!” says Moloko. She says they were positively surprised by the large crowd that heeded a call to united prayer that grew out of a powerful time of prayer in Parliament on May 8.

“The crowd was so diverse in so many ways representing the Body of Christ in Cape Town. We call it the United and One Church of Cape Town. Different denominations from the pentecostals, charismatics and the the traditional churches were there! Young and old, different races, South Africans and foreigners living in South Africa, people from Kwa-Zulu Natal were among those gathered. Intercessors, Pastors, the youth, musicians, dancers, Ushers,etc…the church of Christ gathered to offer their gifts sacrificially to the Lord and to serve one another on the day a!

“What I remember the most was the hunger and thirst for God that the crowds demonstrated. People were gathered unto the Lord and no one else! Everything flowed in Unity…the worship, the prayers, the message and the response was of a church that has been waiting in patience and perseverance……and ready to soar on wings as Eagles! Soar it did! I have been a part of a few strategic gatherings in the city and the nation and I have never experienced such Unity and the unrestricted and unhindered flow of the Spirit of God!” says Moloko.

Helen Phillips, founder of Prayer Mushroom Ministry, reports that the united prayer gathering was opened with eight blasts of the shofars and the reading of the word Joel 2 : 15-18.

She writes: “Praise and worship that followed was spirit filled and took us right into the throne room of the Lord.Andre Baard then showed a short video of the prophecies spoken over Cape Town since 1908 which was most inspirational. Michelle and Arthur Coetzee talked about the visions God had given them about Cape Town and revival fire which was starting here. Michelle had seen Jesus weeping over his body which was divided and fragmented with separate plans and agendas.It was so important to unite as the body of Christ. We must all die to self and live only for what The Lord requires of us.The leaders were given golden crowns to wear and as an outward symbol of dying to self, we cast our crowns at the foot of the cross in humble surrender.

“We prayed around the eight gates of influence in society; each leader taking a topic and praying for 2-3 minutes with the congregation agreeing and supporting the prayer. The eight gates were 1. the family, 2.the belief system, 3.the government, governance and leadership, 4.the economy, 5.education, 6. science and technology, 7. media, and 8. art, sport and culture. All the prayers were repenting of ungodly behaviour and asking God to come in and bring His Kingdom in our land. Steve Swart, ACDP Member of Parliament prayed for the government and there were loud cheers and hallelulias in agreement as he called the Christians into Parliament and claimed a Christian Government for our country.

“We then prayed for the suburbs of Cape Town and each person prayed around the problems facing each suburb and asked God to forgive, restore and heal our land.
The programme ended by praying for Israel and South Africa and free T-shirts were given out commemorating the event Uniting in Prayer and Worship.The meeting ended at 7.45 (late because of the move of venue) but we were all rejoicing at the move of the Holy Spirit and the unity of purpose of the worshippers.”
