Straight off her collaboration with Benjamin Dube, singer, songwriter and former Joyous Celebration lead singer HLE, also known to many as Hlengiwe Ntombela, released her debut solo single Dwala last Friday — and it went straight to number one on the iTunes charts.
The iTunes success was achieved amid some major releases by leading South Africa artists — “a difficult feat for any artist but more so a new and emerging one. But HLE defied the odds,” says her publicist, The T Effect, in a press release.
“Dwala, is a beautifully-arranged song with an infectious melody and chorus that finds HLE showing her pitch-perfect voice and joyfully praising the rock of her salvation, the Lord,” says thepress release.
As the daughter of a bishop, HLE grew up surrounded by praise and worship in Kwa-Zulu Natal and she says: “Worship is like oxygen to me.”
Her heart for worship is also reflected in her popular YouTube series, In My Living Room, which promotes a faithful attitude while allowing people into her personal space. ‘‘My mission was to show that this is not something we just come across. It’s literally life. Absolutely anywhere is a place for you to have your time of worship,’’ she says of the series.
Talking of her #1 debut on iTunes with Dwala, she said: “I’m still overwhelmed. It’s special when you realise that the people you serve appreciate the craft as much as you do.”
Dwala is the lead single from HLE’s debut album, Your Kingdom on Earth to be released in time for Easter. The soulful singer, who has shared stages with the likes of Kirk Franklin, Khaya Mthethwa, Judith Sephuma and Isreal Houghton, will also tour the country. Dates and venues will be announced soon
