Grammy award winning Christian musician, Israel Houghton, set Christian media ablaze yesterday when he announced his official divorce from his wife of over 20 years, Meleasa Houghton. Posted on the singer’s Facebook page, the statement revealed that Houghton and his now ex-wife had been separated for a long time due to infidelity on his side.

He explained: “Several years ago I failed and sinned in my marriage. Though this is new to many, it is not new to us as we have been working through this for over 5 years. Although we tried, the challenges in our relationship have proven too much to overcome.”

The worship leader asked for grace and privacy as he and his family work towards healing and personal restoration, apologising to the masses who have come to love and support his ministry. “Although I am sincerely sorry, and forgiven, I soberly realise that I will live with the consequences of my failings for the rest of my life. As this has become a public matter I want to apologise to the many who have supported my ministry through the years. I’m sorry for the many who will be hurt to learn of my personal failure.”

Fans around the world took to social media to show their support with many thanking him for his transparency. A commenter named PJ Morgan graciously wrote: “You have only sinned against God. You owe us nothing. We will continue to pray and support you, both of you…”

Houghton had recently celebrated his 10th Grammy nomination for  the song, “How awesome is our God”, which he co-wrote with South African worship leader, Neville D.
