One Gospel launching gospel lyrics contest

lyricsONE Gospel, channel 331 DStv, is launching the Inspired Lyric Competition to provide a platform for songwriters across the African Continent, the channel says in a press release.

Llyricists from across the continent are invited to write and submit their work from September 1 to September 20. The top three lyrics chosen from the entries will be put to music and performed by Mahalia Buchanan, Loyiso Bala and Solly Mahlangu. These three songs will be released as music videos on ONE Gospel and as singles across various Christian radio stations as part of our 6thBirthday celebrations on the 1st of November, says the channel.

Viewers will have the opportunity to vote for their favourite of the three songs and a final winner will be announced at the end of November 2013. The winner of the competition will receive a further R10 000.00 cash prize, and the two runners up will receive a R5 000 cash prize.

Loyiso Bala who will be performing one of the songs commented: “Gospel music is not a genre but rather the message within a genre. Lyrical content is the most important aspect of creating a gospel song. I am really honoured to be involved in this project because it is not about us finding the best gospel singer, but the real star behind a successful song; the lyricist”.

Through September 1 to September 30, anybody aged 18 years and older, who would like to put their song writing skills into action, must submit their lyrics via email to info@onegospel.co.za. More information about the competition,  including competition rules and the entry form are available on the ONE Gospel website.

The aim of the channel is to contribute to the development of gospel music and promote it amongst various nations throughout the world. The channel gives exposure to artists producing gospel music, and this competition gives the people behind the music a chance to showcase their talent, and this will inspire other upcoming songwriters to share their talent with the music industry, says the press release.

  1. Loyiso is so accurate in her insight: “Gospel music is not a genre but rather the message within a genre. Lyrical content is the most important aspect of creating a gospel song”. I would expand this to say that the lyrical content of the message is
the most important aspect of creating ANY song. We take unnecessary risks when we expect the musician to be the lyricist and the performer. These are three distinct skills, seldom found in one person. For top quality songs, those gifted in each skill should work together as a team.
