Opportunity to learn from biblical template for political development of nations

“Prophetic Seasons in the Political Development of Nations” is the intriguing name of a 1-day seminar in Pretoria on January 31 to prepare Christians for the upcoming national elections.

During the seminar Segun Olanipekun, a pastor, author and student of biblical nation building, will facilitate interactive discussion on about 15 phases of political development that he says can be found in Scripture and which provide a prophetic template for God-honouring nation building.

Olanipekun, who heads up the Institute of Christian Leadership Development, said he was holding the event in obedience to a prompting of the Holy Spirit.

He said he had noticed that South African Christians who, a decade ago, were apathetic about politics or were apolitical, were becoming more engaged with the political process. While this was a good thing, there was a risk of grave pitfalls through engaging with the process in an uncoordinated or self-centred way — something he had observed happening in various African nations, he said.

“God is a God of process. We need to go to the Bible to understand the unique role the Church must play in political development. This seminar will help believers understand political phases, and locate themselves in relevant phases, in order to provide practical answers to the political problems in the nation,” he said.

SA Christians’ political apathy of a decade ago was not unique. The biblical Children of Israel also went through an apathetic phase towards nation building, followed by a presumptious phase regarding entering the Promised Land, he said.

The seminar, which is aimed at voters, representatives of political parties, politicians, and church leaders, will be from 8am to 4pm at the NG Kerk, Lynwood Ridge, Pretoria on Thursday January 31. The registration fee is R200 and includes refreshments and seminar material which will be emailed to attendees.
