Spencer Kennedy releases debut single ‘The Fight Is Over”

Spencer Kennedy

South African gospel artist and producer Spencer J Kennedy, last week released his debut single The Fight Is Over throughout South Africa.

Born and raised in Cape Town since the age of 10, and after a prophesy over his life, Spencer knew that he had a God-given mandate: first to flood the Cape and then the world with worship music.

Taught the basics by his father, Kennedy became a phenomenon with his musical talent, having been offered the opportunity to perform all around the world. There came a period of dealing with abuse as a young boy in a youth group, and coming to terms with speaking out about it and allowing healing to take place.

One Sunday in 2019 after an anointed worship service led by Kennedy, Hilton Peterson, who is the founder of The Jesus Collective, received a word from God that the time had come for Kennedy to record his own live DVD.

Plans were set and Remnant Worship Restored began to take shape. The powerful live DVD, co-produced by Marco van der Merwe and Spencer J Kennedy, also features the talented vocals of Hlengwe Ntombele, Lebohang Khapola, David J, Byron Levi and more.

“Remnant, meaning the people who have been left, or hidden, these songs are especially for them,” says Kennedy. “I was given the Scripture “Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.” — John 4:23-24 (NIV)

The songs on the album are all Jesus-based. “I always tell songwriters to put the name of Jesus into all their songs, because the world is trying to take the name of Jesus out of everything. The Word says, “The power is in the name of Jesus”. Demons literally flee when you call upon His name.

The Fight Is Over is the debut radio single from the 7 track DVD. “My sister and I were sitting in studio and the guitarist was playing a riff, my sister began singing some lyrics, I added in some keys and in 10 minutes the song was there. It has become an anthem in Cape Town, at our events and church.

“The moment I began performing the song I endured a spiritual attack. I asked: ‘Lord, how can you give me a song called The Fight Is Over and then I’m left here fighting?’ I realised that is how God works, like the scene from the movie Evan Almighty , ‘… does God give him courage, or does he give him opportunities to be courageous?’ This song declares that MY fight is over, it’s HE that will fight for me.”

Kennedy led worship at Shekinah Full Gndospel Church in Mitchell’s Plain for 15 years, and is now the full-time Musical Director for The Jesus Collective.  He was mentored by Al Etto (I Love You Daddy), was musical director for Vashawn Mitchel (Nobody Greater) during his tour to South Africa as well as musical director for Hle’s debut album “Your Kingdom On Earth”.

Kennedy has had the privilege of performing and sharing the stage with many Gospel favourites: internationally, Tye Tribbett, James Fortune and Fred Hammond and locally; Jonathan Rubain, Judith Sephuma, Ernie Smith and Neville D. He is husband to Anneline, and father to Leah, 7 and Tehillha,2.
