I was instantly moved to rage and tears at the same time when the following reports came through: “In the Maldives, a 15-year-old rape victim has been sentenced to 100 lashes for engaging in premarital sex, court officials said. The charges against the girl were brought against her last year after police investigated accusations that her stepfather had raped her and killed their baby” – and then in the same breath the radio announcer continued saying that there are speculations that beer in South Africa is made out of bathwater at which the co-announcer said: “The thought of having to drink dirty bath water makes my stomach turn”.
In one sentence a girl is sentenced to a 100 lashes, no comment, but Beer made from bath water makes the stomach turn. Does this reflect just how “immune” and accepting we have become when a religion such as Islam flogs a 15year old girl with a 100 lashes because her stepfather raped her over and over again and then hides her in an orphanage for 8 months, away from the world’s eye’s? Is this the loving, tolerant peaceful religion of Islam? How long will we keep silent, how long will the church defend Islam and the Sharia law, proclaiming we serve the same god? If Christians and Moslems serve the same God I definitely want to be counted as an atheist. Why are women in Islam silent about their sisters who are flogged, raped, killed all in the name of Allah? Are they afraid that the same fate may befall them? Why is the Church of Christ silent? Is it because it fears the wrath of Islam?
Editor’s note: According to online news reports, the young rape victim was sentenced to 100 lashes for premarital sex with another man — something that police discovered while investigating the rape case. Subsequently, amidst an international outcry, the Maldives President has asked the attorney general to appeal against the decision. The fact remains however, that the Islamic court wants to subject this teenager who has already suffered much abuse to the pain and humiliation of 100 lashes!

I agree with the Rant. Today on International Women’s Day SAfm debated women’s rights in Iran and exposed more horrid facts, eg a Man can marry any woman he chooses, even a non-Muslim; but a woman must marry the one her father/guardian chooses for her, and he must be a Muslim. A woman reaches the age of legal responsibility when 9 years old; a man much older. On a related matter: the difference between the columnist’s account and the editor’s version alerts all of us to check our sources very well, and quote them. These days many myths circulate as fact, especially on the web. Christians must be discerning, wise as serpents, harmless as doves. Please always cite sources.
This is so unjust, what a barbarous court decision, I,m sure that most Muslims agree about this too. Please do something about these cruel heartless courts for this young girls sake and also for the fates of many other women too. It is time for Muslim men to stand up for their sisters and mothers.
