The truth about our students

[notice]A monthly column by farmer, preacher and writer for Jesus, Angus Buchan[/notice]

As I write this column there are headline articles printed in all the major newspapers in our beloved South Africa about the students burning down a theatre on the UJ campus in Johannesburg.

And of course with that goes the perception that all the students are unruly, wild, and totally irresponsible, and I can tell you from firsthand experience that it is not so, in fact the very opposite is more the truth of the matter.

We have nearly completed a speaking tour of all the major campuses of the Universities in the Nation, and have had incredible results, we have found the students to be receptive to the Word of God, seeking for support, direction, and purpose for their lives in the future!

A perception can become very misleading, because it is not the truth, it is only what people think is the truth.

I was speaking in the very hall at UJ where the fire and arson has taken place with a potential R100-million worth of damage. That lunchtime meeting was truly amazing. First of all, our plane broke down in Pietermaritzburg, and so we were about one and a half hours late for the engagement, and yet not one student left the theatre!

We spoke about “The meaning of life “and had the complete attention of every single student and had an overwhelming response to the altar call. The singing just about lifted the rooftop as we experienced the joy of the Lord together.

About a week earlier we were speaking at UCT in Cape Town. There were protesters outside the building and the organisers went out and invited them to come in and join us but they would not come into the meeting. Our conclusion was that the devil is a complete coward and when confronted with the truth — the spoken Word of God –backs off every time. Just like the bully who runs away every time you stand up to him.

We believe that over 90% of the students in our country just want to get on with their lives and complete their degrees and make their families proud. After one of the meetings I spoke to a young male black student who is in his third year studying law. He was extremely emotional, and said that he wanted to finish his degree and then tell folk about the “meaning of life”, namely Jesus! He told me that his mother cleans toilets in Johannesburg to pay for his studies.

Please pray for the students in our beloved land. They are wonderful young folk and really have a desire to make this country a much better place for all to live in together. The Christians in this Nation need to support them, love them, and encourage them to finish their studies, and to make us very proud of them.

Jesus said in John 16: 33 : These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the World you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the World.

God Bless,
Angus Buchan

  1. Well done Uncle for taking hope and love to the students. There is far too much ‘downing’ on them. Mighty Men supports you all the way and we are here for any students that wish to join us. God bless from Piperjames MMC.WC

  2. God bless you Angus for always being positive and upholding the hope of God’s Word in a world where so many negative issues are promoted.

  3. Thank you Angus. God sure raised you up for a time such as this. I hold you up in prayer because I know the enemy isn’t happy having you on the scene.!
