Wow Hits 2016: Review

A music review by Luchae Williams

It’s no secret: I love compilation albums! I love that they feature the best picks from a variety of CD’s and that listening to one is like having your CD player permanently on shuffle. I love shuffle. With that said, I especially enjoyed the latest release from Christian music’s annual compilation: Wow Hits 2016.

The two disc collection, released in September 2015, showcases some of the biggest songs on Christian radio for 2014 and 2015. With the likes of Jeremy Camp, Big Daddy Weave, Francesca Battistelli, Matt Maher, Mandisa, Crowder, Rend Collective and 2015 Dove Newcomer of the Year, Lauren Daigle, I found it to be a rather eclectic and very diverse pick of songs.

Opening track ‘Greater’ by pop-rock band, MercyMe, does a good job as an introduction. It has a folksy, honky-tonk vibe with a great message taken from 1 John 4:4: “Greater is He living in me, than He who is living in the world.”

Third Day teams up with All Sons and Daughters in their hit single, ‘Soul on fire’ – a Gospel praise track that also has elements of folk in it. The vocals on this track is gritty and raw and really does the song justice. It’s this and other distinctive tracks like ‘From this day’ by I Am They or the soulful ‘Brother’ by Needtobreathe that makes this collection refreshing.

Other favourites such as Dove Award winner, Lauren Daigles hot debut single, ‘How can it be’ and the always trending Jamie Grace’s ‘Do life big’, were obvious choices for the album along with songs from Kari Jobe (‘I am not alone’) and the Passion Conference team (‘Even so come.’)

I really enjoyed being introduced to Francesca Battistelli’s Christian pop song ‘He knows my name’, Casting Crowns ‘Broken together’ and Hillsong United’s ‘Touch the sky’. Other notable additions are tracks from TobyMac (‘Beyond me’), Plumb (‘Lord I’m ready now’) and the thought-provoking ‘Save my life’ by group, Sidewalk Prophets.

Special mention must be made about bonus track, ‘I’ll keep on‘, a collaboration by singer Jeremiah Carlson and Christian rap artist, NF. In my opinion, it’s NF’s melodic prose that sets this song apart as he passionately shares his story about calling out to God to deliver him from a sinful life. He delivers each line with heartfelt honesty and emotion, making this track an easy listen, whether you’re into hip hop or not! It is definitely my favorite song on the album and the one to listen to if you don’t know where to start.

As always, Wow Hits does not fail to deliver. The song choices are well thought out and borrow from different genres of Christian music, which makes for a tasty collection of God-inspired songs! This album would do well in your CD player if you’re planning to hit the long road this December and would also be a great Christmas stocking filler.
