Angus Buchan commends prayer-meeting farmers for their ‘backbone’

Angus Buchan addresses farmers amidst heat and dust at a prayer meeting in the Northern Cape on Wednesday

“There weren’t hundreds of thousands of people there but they were people who had grit and backbone like stainless steel — like I have never seen in my whole life,” said evangelist Angus Buchan about farmers he addressed at a prayer meeting in the Northern Cape on Wednesday.

Farmers from all over SA gathered on a farm south west of Douglas for the prayer meeting that was called to instil hope and faith among farmers, farm workers and people in the agricultural industry following recent veld fires that have caused devastation to many.

“I have travelled the world and not seen people with such ‘vasbyt’,” Buchan told Gateway News today.

“They were determined to stand and despite the dust and the sand and the heat and the wind that was blowing [at the prayer meeting], they didn’t move.

“A 92-year-old man got out of his wheelchair and walked to the front to come and recommit his life to Christ with everybody else, including the police force, children, old people, young people, people sitting under thorn bushes just to get themselves out of the sun.

“What an incredible day! And we prayed for rain and it’s on the way. Praise God. He’s a good God!” he said.

OFM News reports that Buchan hoped that the prayer meeting, with the theme “Out of the Ashes”, would keep farmers motivated to continue to plough their land despite the aftermath of the veld fires.

According to the OFM News report Pastor Mark Southey said on behalf of the event organisers that they were pleased with the turnout of farmers and community members. He said that, as a believer, it was the relentless fighting of veld fires that made him realise that a mass prayer event was the only thing that would save the farmers, their families, and their land.

Southey said that the estimated 455 000 hectares of land that was destroyed as a result of veld fires, had impacted the livelihoods of many of the farmers, their families, and the sustainability of farmworkers.

In his message to the farmers [see video excerpt below] Buchan assured them that Jesus was in the fire with them as He had been in the fiery furnace with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego (Daniel 3:25)
