About 2 000 people attended a gathering at the Kouga Dam on Saturday afternoon led by farmer evangelist Angus Buchan who was invited by church leaders in Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth) and Jeffreys Bay to pray for rain in the drought-stricken area.
Most of the people in probably the biggest crowd ever seen at the camping ground beneath the 94.5m wall of the major storage dam near Patensie had travelled a considerable distance to attend the event. After arriving an hour after the scheduled 3pm starting time Buchan said the devil had tried to keep him from leading the meeting. He said his flight from Durban had been seriously delayed and he only managed to keep his appointment after a last-minute arrangement was made to fly him by helicopter from Gqeberha to the venue.
As a result of the holdup the so-called Revival Rain prayer meeting ended at 6pm, an hour late. But nobody appeared to mind the delay as a peaceful atmosphere of unity and hope prevailed.
I withheld your rain. Will you return to Me?”
Buchan preached a rousing message, telling the crowd they were going to phone Jesus at his telephone number Jeremiah 33:3 — “Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.”
He urged everybody to believe with him, that the dam, which was 16% full at the time, will overflow as a result of God’s power released through prayer. He emphasised the need for knowing God’s name, repentance, and exercising faith.
Buchan called the crowd forward to the stage and led prayers of salvation, healing, for marriages, against stress and depression, for revival — and finally for rain and against a massive locust invasion in parts of the Eastern Cape, Western Cape and Northern Cape.

Agri Eastern Cape president Jan Cloete told Gateway News today that the locust invasion is “of biblical proportions”.
“Nothing on this scale has been seen in living memory. I don’t know if we are going to win,” he said.
He said that since the weekend locusts have arrived in the Patensie citrus area.
He confirmed that two helicopters which had been controversially grounded by the Department of Agriculture were back in the air again spraying the swarms. He said they were trying everything they could to fight the invasion. He welcomed the prayer at the Kouga Dam on Saturday and ongoing prayers.
As I was writing this report this afternoon the sky went dark as heavy rain fell in Gqeberha accompanied by a dramatic thunderstorm — and a ripple of social media activity praising God for answers to prayer.
