Gamtoos Valley farming community praying at Kouga Dam on Sunday

The Kouga Dam whose level is at a record low of less than 5% of capacity.

A prayer and worship event aimed mainly at farmers and farm workers in the important citrus, dairy and crop farming area will be held at the record-low Kouga Dam from 3pm on Sunday.

Event organiser Tony Bergman an evangelist based at Andrieskraal which is near the dam which is a lifeline for the Gamtoos Valley farming community said everyone is welcome to attend the event but “our heart is to get our local people together”.

With the dam at less than 5% capacity and not able to deliver water when it is below 3% the situation was desperate and while government is doing what it can, “we as believers feel like we need to do something”, he said.

Weather forecasters have said no significant rain is expected in the catchment area over the next three months and the dam is expected to be empty by July. Farmers have already been struggling to survive as they have been restricted to just 20% of their annual water quota since July last year. In a banner advertising Sunday’s prayer event, participants are urged to come full of faith for the dame to be filled. This call to faith is supported by the Scripture Matthew 19:26 — Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

Tony said a local farmer had asked him why they were arranging a prayer event so soon after a worship and prayer event on April 13 that was organised by Christians from Port Elizabeth. He said he replied that Sunday’s event will be a continuation of the prayer and worship that took place on the 13th and was attended mainly by people from outside the farming area.

A PE prayer warrior, Blessing Marunga has called for believers to sign up for a campaign of continuous prayer for rain in the region from May until the end of the year.

He said Covid regulations will be adhered to at Sunday’s prayer event.

  1. You can ask and pray in fact, every day because our Lord will hear us in His own time. Please Lord, see our need, hear our cry, help us, the day when our faith fades away…
