Invitation to worship and pray on wall of ‘record low’ Kouga Dam gains momentum

A call to gather on the wall of the Kouga Dam on Saturday to worship God and pray for rain is getting more traction than he expected, said Port Elizabeth attorney Wikus Nel.

Following alarming reports that Nelson Mandela Bay’s largest dam is at a record low 5% and could run dry by the end of July, Wikus and his wife Karissa recently felt God prompting them to arrange a prayer and worship gathering at the dam.

He said that during an Easter getaway in Plettenberg Bay, a week after he and Karissa were prompted to arrange a worship and prayer event at the dam, he bumped into another Port Elizabeth person with the same name as himself — Wikus Nel — who told him that a week before God had told him to contact him to say they needed to go and worship and pray.

“It’s so strange that God spoke to both Wikus Nelle on the same day and they we connected in Plett!” said Wikus.

He said the next day he spoke to leaders at Doxa Deo Church in PE where he serves on the ministry team in a part-time capacity, and with their firm support put out the word to anybody who might like to join them to show up at the dam at 10am on Saturday “with camp stools and umbrellas because we are just trusting God to do what only He can do”.

Initially he imagined perhaps going out with about 20 people from their church but there were signs that the event was attracting wider support than he had expected — both locally and further afield.

He said he received calls on Wednesday morning from singer and ministry leader Heinz Winkler and marketplace Christian leader Graham Power, who assured him that people in Cape Town will be praying in solidarity with them on Saturday. In a drought crisis in 2018 Cape Town faced the prospect of running out of municipal water and Christians responded in prayer and saw God’s faithfulness. “It is amazing how the Body of Christ all over is taking ownership of this situation,” said Wikus.

“The more and more I read the news articles saying they are not predicting any heavy rains for our season and that ‘Day Zero’ is coming closer and closer, I am just saying: ‘I don’t accept that’.

“If God has called us to establish a Kingdom in a city then we need to take ownership of this Kingdom we are planting — the Kingdom of God — and say we will seek His face, and His righteousness and then the rest will follow. So, we just want to go and seek God and anyone is welcome to join us.,” said Wikus.

He said that the exact spot at which they will gather on Saturday will depend on how many people arrive. They will watch out for people from 10am and expect to start worshiping and praying at about 10.30am.

He said nobody should come “expecting a show”.

“We are going to humble ourselves and come in unity and whatever happens it is all about God.”

The Kouga Dam is situated about 2 hours drive from Port Elizabeth near Patensie. Gateway News representatives will be going there — to worship and pray!
