Leaving a legacy – Angus Buchan

If we look at the Oxford Dictionary to define the word legacy, it means something handed down by a predecessor.

What are you and I handing down to our loved ones? We are not talking so much about material possessions but we are talking more about godly instructions and godly examples. If we go to the Book of 1 Kings 2:2-4 (NKJV), we will see that David left a very powerful legacy for his son Solomon. David told his son that he was dying and therefore he left him a legacy. He said, you must prove yourself as a man. Then he said, keep charge of the Lord your God, He must be first in your life. You must walk in His ways and then he says, you must keep His statutes and His commandments. He goes on to say His judgments, His testimonies as it is written in the law of Moses, so that you will prosper in all that you do and wherever you go. Then he carries on and says: “If your sons take heed to their way and walk before Me in truth with all their heart and with their soul, you shall not lack a man on the throne of Israel.” David was telling Solomon, even his children needed to leave a legacy so that there would always be someone from his family on the royal throne.

We as fathers and mothers need to be so careful that we don’t spend all our time trying to make money, thinking that if we leave our children with a decent amount of money or business, they will be secure. What we need to rather leave them is a spiritual legacy. Remember your children will not do what you tell them to do, they will do what you do. So, if you are an adulterer and a womaniser, you will leave a legacy for your young son, because he will see what you are doing. If you are a drunkard, an alcoholic, he will follow in your footsteps unless the Holy Spirit intervenes.

What we need to do is to be good examples. That is the best legacy we will ever leave our children. We don’t have to be rich in material possessions, but we must be rich in spiritual things. Your son and your daughter must see that you are a man or a woman of peace, of love, a person who knows where they are going and that will give them the platform to build their lives upon.
