A baby girl who is thought to have been born last night or in the early hours of this morning was picked up among reeds in a flowing stream in Kuwadzana, Harare and brought to Dawnview Children’s Home, said Tatenda Gunguwo of Voice of Peace an NPO which cares for orphans and vulnerable children in Zimbabwe.
He said it seems the infant was “thrown into the river to float away but thank God the vicious flowing water threw her into the reeds and women who go to Mbare Musika, our farm market, to buy produce for reselling around 4am heard her crying because of cold and hunger and came to her rescue and brought her to our children’s home”.
He said that when the baby girl arrived at the home she had no clothes and she was wrapped in two plastic bags.
Tatenda, who together with his wife Lucia, have cared for more than 6 000 orphans over the years of their wide-ranging ministry to the despised and rejected, said they are currently not able to take in the little girl as the children’s home is presently not operational as it is being renovated.
He said he tool the infant to the local police station and police have opened a case to find the mother. He and the police took the baby to the Social Welfare office where officials said they have nowhere to place her as all the children’s homes are full. They asked Tatenda to take the baby home while they look for foster parents.
“We went through some of the bags which were left by teams who visited us in the past and found a few clothes to dress the baby but have no milk for her.

“I will be leaving soon with the baby to the hospital for medical examination.
“Pray for us to finish the children’s home so that we will be able to take such children in,” he said.
