In the crowded world of streaming entertainment, Bible-based content has been attracting lots of attention lately. According to data released on Tuesday, October 21, three Christian TV series nabbed spots on the list of Prime Video’s Top 10 TV shows in the United States.
The Chosen Adventures, an animated show that debuted October 17, came in at No 7. At No 8 was House of David, which had a Season 2 release date of October 5. The Chosen, which found a new streaming home with Amazon earlier this year, landed at No 10 — despite having no new episodes since summer.
Industry experts credit The Chosen for creating a wave of well-received Christian programming. The TV series about Jesus’ life, which debuted at the end of 2017, has been watched by an estimated 300 million people worldwide.
The Chosen proved to Hollywood that a large audience existed for values-based entertainment, according to media professor Diane Winston. “Streaming services are companies that need to make money, and what drives them is getting more eyeballs,” she told the New York Times. “If they think faith-based content is going to get that for them, they will invest in it.”
Season 1 of House of David had 44 million views and reached an estimated 80 million people. Last week’s Season 2 premiere picked up with the epic battle of David versus Goliath.
House of David is available to stream in the Wonder Project subscription channel on Amazon’s Prime Video. Writer and co-director Jon Gunn said the series is “filled with key biblical moments that are right out of Scripture.”
Jon Erwin, creator and co-director of House of David, said he aims to add “a greater sense of meaning and depth” to beloved Bible stories. He also hopes that viewers without a church background will “open up the Book that’ll change their life.”
The Chosen universe expands
The Chosen Adventures, an animated series from 5&2 Studios, is geared toward children as well as adults. Dallas Jenkins, creator and director of The Chosen, serves as executive producer of the new project.
Many characters from The Chosen — including Jonathan Roumie as Jesus — lend their voices to the animated series.
Creating The Chosen Adventures was challenging yet rewarding, Jenkins explained. He said he wanted to add whimsy and warmth to the storytelling without compromising biblical truth. Parents and churches can buy a kit with show-related activities and digital components.
Television and film can remind people of the power of Bible narratives, Jenkins said, especially when those stories are presented from different perspectives. “My hope, ultimately,” he said, “is that seeing Jesus through the eyes of those who actually met Him can change and impact you in the same way that [those people] were changed and impacted.”
Jenkins is currently filming Season 6 of the live-action version of The Chosen. It focuses on the 24 hours leading up to Jesus’ crucifixion.
Season 6 is expected to release on Prime Video in late 2026, with that season’s finale premiering in theatres on March 12 2027. As with previous seasons, upcoming episodes of The Chosen also will be available to view for free through the show’s app.
