As South Africa prepares for the 2026 local government elections, many people are asking what they can do to make a difference in their communities. Some will campaign. Some will volunteer. Many will vote. But perhaps one of the most powerful contributions Christians can make is to pray. Throughout Scripture, God calls His people to stand in the gap for nations, cities, leaders, and communities. Prayer is not a passive activity. It is a spiritual partnership with God that invites His wisdom, protection, righteousness, and purposes into the affairs of men.

City Connect: A praying nation
The vision of City Connect was birthed from a simple yet profound conviction: what if every city and town across South Africa united in prayer during the 50 days leading up to the local government elections to be held on November 4 2026?
Why pray for cities?
The Bible places great significance on cities. Jerusalem, Nineveh, Antioch, Corinth, and Ephesus were all centres of influence where God’s purposes were worked out. When a city flourishes, its people flourish. When a city struggles, its people feel the impact. This is why Jeremiah instructed God’s people to pray for the welfare of the city. Today, South Africa faces many challenges, including crime, corruption, unemployment, poverty, violence, substance abuse, and social division. Yet these challenges are not greater than God’s ability to intervene when His people pray.
Connecting cities through prayer
The City Connect initiative seeks to connect intercessors across South Africa’s towns and cities. The goal is to connect existing believers, churches, ministries, and prayer groups around a common purpose. Prayer has a unique ability to unite people where politics, race, language, and social differences often divide. When believers kneel together before God, they recognise their shared dependence on Him. Imagine prayer gatherings taking place in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, Mahikeng, Bloemfontein, Gqeberha, Polokwane, Kimberley, Mbombela, and hundreds of smaller towns. Imagine thousands of believers lifting their voices together for righteous leadership, peaceful elections, and the healing of our nation.

Praying for local government elections
Elections are more than political events. They determine leadership, influence policy decisions, affect service delivery, and shape the future of communities. Scripture instructs believers to pray for those in authority so that society may experience peace, order, and stability (1 Tim 2:1-2). Prayer helps us move beyond personal preferences and seek God’s will for our nation. Rather than merely reacting to political developments, Christians are called to proactively pray for wisdom, integrity, justice, and Godly leadership.
Praying versus protesting
There are times when citizens appropriately raise concerns and seek accountability. However, prayer reaches where human effort cannot. Protests may draw attention to problems, but prayer invites God into the solution. Prayer changes hearts, opens doors, grants wisdom, exposes corruption, protects communities, and brings spiritual transformation. The early Church changed the Roman world not through political power but through persistent prayer, faithfulness, and obedience to God. The call of City Connect is not to replace civic responsibility but to complement it through spiritual responsibility.
Spiritual significance of 50 days
The number 50 carries profound Biblical significance. Following Passover, Israel counted 50 days to Pentecost. The number 50 was associated with preparation, expectation, harvest, and the outpouring of God’s Spirit. In the year of Jubilee, proclaimed in the 50th year, captives were released, debts were forgiven, and restoration was declared. 2026 also marks the 50th anniversary of the Soweto youth uprising of June 16 1976, which was a watershed moment in South Africa’s resistance to apartheid. A 50-day prayer journey before the elections provides an opportunity for believers to prepare spiritually, seek God’s direction, and contend for revival in our towns and cities. We believe these 50 days can become a season of repentance, unity, restoration, and renewed hope for South Africa.
A call to the watchmen
South Africa needs more than political solutions. We need spiritual awakening. We need watchmen on the walls who will pray, intercede, and believe God for transformation. The City Connect vision is an invitation to every believer, every church, every ministry, and every intercessor to join together in prayer during these crucial weeks ahead of the local government elections.
