‘Booked in advance’ — a story of simple faith in a Father who always provides

Piper James with his train ticket from Heaven which blessed him, a young commuter called Brad, and everbody who has received this testimony in their heart

James McGowan aka Piper James a longtime stalwart in the Mighty Men Conference movement in the Western Cape and a man who uses his talent for piping to the glory of God recently sent me a voice note in which he shares a faith-boosting experience he had on Cape Town station on Wednesday last week. Below is his testimony in his own words as shared in a recording he made on the station, moments after his experience:

Hello everybody, this is Piper James coming to you from the railway station, Cape Town Central Railway Station, the mother city in South Africa. I want to give you a live example on how God works. So many of you know that I get the bus into Cape Town three times a week. I walk to Greenpoint, I evangelise on the way, sometimes I take my pipes, depending on the weather.

So today, like most days, I got the bus into town and it’s the day before Heritage Day, so I walked around the streets and I had photographs of all sorts of people wearing their traditional dress and it was a lovely time. At the same time I was evangelising and speaking to people on the streets.

Anyway, I made my destination having had a coffee beforehand. I did what I had to do, I decided to walk all the way back to the railway station to get the train back to either Vasco or Monte Vista, because I can catch one or the other. As I got to the train station I only had R10 left because I’d given my loose change to people on the street. I don’t do it every day but only now and then when I can afford it. A couple around here, a couple around there, and I give them a little script.

Two days after his railway station experience Piper James paid an early visit to Parliament where he felt led to play his pipes to prepare the ground for Holy Spirit to move among the believers who would gather there later to participate in the National Day of Prayer and Repentance.

Anyway, when I got to the train station, there was a young man at the side of the queue, called Brad and he came to me and he had a rosary around his neck and he had a little book in his hand. And he said: “Excuse me sir, I need some money to get to the Strand. I don’t have enough. Can you help me?”

“I said, son, all I’ve got in my hand is a R10 note.” I said: “It’s going to cost me R6 to get on the train and I’ll be left with four rand change.” I said: “And you can have that because Father God always provides. Just have the faith.”

Anyway, he neede R12. He had a couple of rand in his hand and I said to him: “The the next person is going to help bless you.”.

So I’m stood in the queue and there’s about 50 people behind me and out of nowhere comes one of the ladies — one of the managers from the railway station — and she walks up to me and she says: “Today I’m blessing you with your ticket. And she handed me the ticket for R6 rand to get on the train at half past the hour to get me to Monte Vista.

I turned around and there’s the young man staring at me aghast and I said: “There’s R10. That’s how God works. Faith in Father God.”

And he then had the fare to (get on the train and go all the way to the Strand. That is God at work when you have faith, when you step out and you proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour. So, I started walking to the back of the queue and on my way to the entrance a young man stood out in front of me with his arms crossed, quite sort of bullish with a bit of an attitude. And he said: “How did you do that? You were in the queue. You were nowhere near that counter.”

I wouldn’t say the young man was too aggressive but he was making a point. He said: “How did you get that ticket?

I said: “I booked it in advance.”

Now the young man obviously doesn’t understand what I’m meaning by that. But Holy Spirit knew that I would be there at that time, knew that that young man, Brad, would be there and needed help. And so He provided. That is Holy Spirit, that is Jesus Christ, that is Father God in Heaven, blessing because of your faith.

And I’d only just said to the young man beforehand: “Son, I don’t carry a lot of money. I only carry enough to get me on the bus, buy a coffee and get me home and that is a fact.”

So there you have it, that is a true testimony as I still am walking up and down the railway station in absolute awe of who Father God is and what He did in front of a crowd. Praise God, hallelujah, keep the faith, do not give up under any circumstances. Amen.
