For the past three years, a joyful team of kids and their pastor at Melkbos Fellowship (https://www.thefellowship.co.za/), have been writing and recording Bible stories for young ones (ages 6-13 years). While the focus was on getting the Word to kids “out there”, it’s been a wonderful journey of growth for those involved with the project.
The Storytime with Joy podcast team (six kids from grades five and six) started their episodes with themes like “How should I treat the school bully?” and “What do I do when I’m scared of the dark?” Soon, however, they started to work their way through Bible books.
This way, the team themselves learned a lot about God’s Word, as they had to engage with the Bible stories together in the studio. And o boy, did they cover a lot of ground! By the time they broke for Christmas holidays at the end of 2024, they had recorded the lives of Joseph, Moses, Joshua, Daniel, the books of 1-2 Samuel, and the whole Gospel of John. It turns out eating a whole elephant can really be done… one bite at a time!

Their most interesting theme, though, was covered around mid 2023 – they called it Tricky Questions. They asked their Facebook followers (https://www.facebook.com/40weekadventure) to tell them some of those niggly God-questions kids are throwing at them. And wow! There were some funny ones, but also really tough ones…
“Why can’t we see God?”
“Where is heaven?”
“Did God make unicorns?”
“Where do babies come from?”
“Am I a boy or a girl?”

As can be expected, wrestling with these questions grew spiritual muscles in the team. Before they could record an answer, they themselves first had to be confident of what God’s Word said about it. Often that took a few weeks of proper digging in and studying, as well as deep conversations with more mature children of God. It was well worth the effort though — the whole team grew in confidence of the Truth of God’s Word as the guide to every aspect of their lives.
