Do not waste time — Angus Buchan

Moses reminds us in Psalm 90 how short and fragile life really is. He writes, The days of our lives are seventy years; and if by reason of strength they are eighty years… it is soon cut off, and we fly away (Psalm 90:10, NKJV).

Life is but a vapour, here today and gone tomorrow. We simply do not have time to waste. We need to redeem the time by dealing quickly with unforgiveness, bitterness, and broken relationships. Moses prayed, “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom” (Psalm 90:12).

Our priority must be the things that have eternal value. We need to tell people about Jesus Christ, His Lordship, and the gift of eternal life. As Jesus asked in Mark 8:36, For what will a man profit if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?

I remember hearing an old Scottish preacher tell the story of an atheist who owned a flour mill. His whole life was devoted to making money. When he became gravely ill, he asked for his bed to be placed beside the grinding stones so he could hear them turning. A godly man came to urge him to make peace with Jesus before it was too late. The miller replied: “I cannot hear you because the grindstones are making so much noise.” He had spent his life listening to the wrong voice.

Don’t leave important things until tomorrow. Tell your family you love them. Spend time with your children and grandchildren. Write that letter, make that phone call, restore that friendship. Your loved ones value your presence far more than any inheritance you may leave behind.

Like the rich farmer in Luke 12, we must not spend our lives building bigger barns while neglecting our souls. We never know when the Lord will call us home.

Today I can honestly say I am living my dream — serving the Lord, encouraging people, praying with them, and pointing them to Jesus. My greatest desire is to leave nothing undone when my work on Earth is finished.

May the beauty of the Lord be upon us, and may He establish the work of our hands (Psalm 90:17). Let us use the precious time God has given us to love others, serve faithfully, and leave this world better than we found it.

Yours in Christ service
