The Israeli diplomats who were murdered in an antisemitic shooting outside the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington DC on Wednesday night were both Jewish followers of Jesus.
Yaron Lischinsky, 28, and his soon-to-be fiancé, Sarah Milgram, 26, were both Messianic believers who focused their careers on forging peace between Israel and Palestinians, reports First Fruits of Zion, a ministry that brings Messianic Jewish teaching to Christians and Jews.
A 30-year-old man identified as Elias Rodriguez reportedly opened fire on a group of four leaving a humanitarian diplomacy event at the museum, killing Lischinsky and Milgrim. Rodriguez then told a bystander to call the police, did not resist arrest, and left little doubt about his motives, shouting “Free Palestine!” as he was taken into custody.
Lischinsky was born in Nuremberg, Germany, to an Argentine Jew and a German-Christian mother. He moved to Israel at the age of 16, where he served in the IDF and attended a Hebrew-speaking Messianic Jewish congregation in Jerusalem. He’s remembered for translating teachings for English-speaking visitors and close friendships with other members. After graduating with a bachelor’s and a master’s degree, he moved to Washington to work as a research assistant in the Israeli embassy’s policy department.
That’s where he met and fell in love with Sarah Milgrim, a young woman raised in Kansas City, where her family attended a Reform synagogue. Her community remembers her speaking up after swastikas were painted at her high school and eventually joining the board of the University of Kansas Hillel. She traveled to Israel on a Birthright tour and was deeply committed to finding common ground between Israelis and Palestinians. Before joining the embassy, Milgram worked for Tech2Peace, an advocacy group training and encouraging dialogue between young Palestinians and Israelis.
The double tragedy of their deaths is made even more devastating by the fact that Lischinsky had planned to propose to Milgram in Jerusalem next week. He had bought an engagement ring for her this week, according Yechial Leiter, ambassador at Israel’s embassy in Washington where the young couple both worked.
