Peter Ryder says his alcoholism escalated over a period of three years to the point he needed alcohol every day and even found himself drinking vodka in his car on the way to work. At five in the afternoon on May 24 this year he crashed his car while drunk and ended up in a police cell. It was his third relapse since joining a recovery programme. This latest relapse was even after he had started walking with Jesus and was baptised last year. In a frank podcast conversation with Ethan Black of Kingfisher FM he shares on how God spoke hope into his life while he was in the cell, and of his determination to walk out the hard road to sobriety, with the help of God’s grace and the powerful tools available to support him. One in seven South African are alcoholics, he says. “If you feel that you have a problem, reach out — reach out to a church, or reach out to an organisation, they are all connected to the various 12-step programmes. You’ve got to do it for yourself,” he says.
