The founders of Cedar had a global vision to nurture young people as missionary educators, foster rural school development, and spread the Gospel. The centre has attracted students from Africa, Asia, America, and Europe. Many of it graduates have established Bible-based educational institutions in their countries.

Recognising a worldqide need for educators who adhere to biblical teaching, the late Rev Erlo Stegen and his wife Kay felt led by God to “launch into the deep”, establishing Cedar Training College (CTC) in January 1994. At the time, it was an off-campus training facility for teachers affiliated with the Potchefstroom Campus of the North-West University, formerly the Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education.

Over the years, CTC evolved, eventually becoming the Cedar College of Education (CCE). In response to changed governmental regulations, CCE transitioned to Cedar International Academy NPC (Cedar). In a milestone development it was registered as a private higher education institution in 2021.
