MYSTERIOUS WAYS: AI and our appetite for a higher Power

A column in which Simon Kumm unpacks the mysterious ways of God, to connect believers with their Father and His incredible living inheritance!

The rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) over the past year or so has been nothing short of startling. The advances in its ability and potential have evoked both excitement and fear, but it’s the whole concept of AI and man’s appetite for it that has got me really excited!

In life there are developments that happen which are, in a way, a symbolic thermometer for where the hearts of the people are at. AI has been one such development that has exposed the appetite of our hearts’ cry for direct access to a higher power. A ready source of knowledge on all subjects. Who wouldn’t want access to something like that? Unless, of course, you’ve already got access to something like that?

Let’s see, AI is in essence an accessible higher form of intelligence, with historical knowledge of every topic under the sun. It also has the ability to take words and “create” images from them and the best part is we have free access to it 24/7!

Sound familiar? There have been few developments in recent history that so closely illustrate man’s yearning for a connection with God than this. Very few depict it so plainly. What we want and yearn for is what God already is and has made available to us, yet man’s pursuit of Him is simply not comparable to the pursuit of unearthing the next AI bot or making use of its vast capabilities to make life or work easier.

The interesting part is that God is actually far more than this. He is not just a parrot reference to historical information, but the Alpha and Omega, so he knows the end as well. He is also not just a tree of knowledge, but one of abundant life, being the very source of love and a living hope.

Where AI can recreate someone’s image. We were created in Gods actual image, which is real. As we compare point for point it would seem that although there is similarity, there really isn’t a comparison between God and AI at all.

The hint of man’s desire and expressed pursuit of this tree of assistance or of knowledge is however an interesting point. It leads us to a fascinating question: If man really knew what God was all about, would our desire for AI and other lesser forms of “power” not pale in significance to our desire for a connection with him? Is this because we just don’t know how easily accessible God is to us? Or perhaps is it due to poor “marketing” of Him from those who proudly bear His name? Or is it man’s disbelief that he can actually hear/see or connect with God in a meaningful way? Or could it be the religious organisations that misrepresent His heart? The truth is we don’t really know.

There are so many more questions we can ask and speculate the reason why we humans neglect the most powerful, knowledgeable and loving source of life available to us. But I will let you ponder those reasons on your own. It’s sufficient to know that our heart’s desire has been exposed. We long for that connection! And connecting with Him is the only place that will provide the answers we seek.
