The upcoming live action film Jesus VR is set to bring the story of Jesus Christ to all major virtual reality platforms just in time for Christmas.

According to Variety, the 90-minute film, created by Autumn Productions and VR production company VRWERX, will depict the birth, baptism, sermon on the mount, the last supper, crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The December release will reach audiences on several major virtual reality forums such as Google Cardboard, Samsung Gear VR, Oculus Rift, PlayStation VR, the HTC Vive, and more.

Behind the film is world-renowned executive producer Enzo Sisti who worked on Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ in 2004 and Father William Fulco, who also worked on Passion as a religious adviser.

The movie was shot in October 2015 and filmed on location in Matera, Italy, all entirely in 360-degree 4K. The ancient village was also the setting for Passion of the Christ.

David Hansen (Hellion, Lovesong, Entertainment) directed and produced the movie, alongside producers Johnny Mac and VRWERX’s Russell Naftal and Alex Barder. The script was written by Andre van Heerden.

“The viewers truly feel they are there with Jesus and his disciples,” Hansen said.

“This is the most powerful story of all time and virtual reality is the perfect way to tell it.”

Sisti added: “I am beyond thrilled to be a part of this groundbreaking project. It’s as exciting a take on the story of Christ as I’ve ever seen and its production values will absolutely set a new benchmark for virtual reality.”

The cast of Jesus VR – The Story of Christ includes Tim Fellingham as Jesus, Mish Boyko as Peter, Christian Serritiello as Andrew, Rhys Howells as Judas and Matteo Carlomagno as John.
