New report reveals Christian freedom eroding rapidly in Australia

A major new report has sparked fresh debate over religious liberty in Australia, warning that many Christians believe their freedom to express and practice their faith is increasingly under threat.

The inaugural Australian Christian Freedom Index, based on responses from more than 10 800 Christians nationwide, found that 92% of respondents believe it is riskier to publicly express their faith today than it was five years ago.

Nearly half said they now self-censor their religious beliefs in workplaces, schools, and public settings.

The report, backed by the Australian Christian Lobby, points to growing concerns over anti-discrimination laws, workplace policies, healthcare mandates, and restrictions surrounding religious teaching on sexuality and gender issues.

Victoria was ranked by respondents as the most restrictive state for Christians, while New South Wales was viewed as comparatively more accommodating.

Australian Christian Lobby chief executive Michelle Pearse said the findings reveal a widening disconnect between Australia’s commitment to diversity and the experiences of many believers.

“Christians are increasingly feeling pressured to stay silent about their beliefs,” Pearse said, according to the report’s release.

She argued that policies intended to promote inclusion are often being applied unevenly when Christian viewpoints are involved.

Among the concerns raised were mandatory healthcare referrals connected to abortion and euthanasia, vilification laws, and cases where Christians allegedly faced disciplinary action over expressions of faith in professional environments.

One example cited involved an employee reportedly challenged for wearing a crucifix at work while colleagues of other faiths were permitted to display religious symbols.

The findings arrive amid broader national discussions about religious freedom and anti-discrimination protections.

Coalition education spokesman Julian Leeser recently defended the rights of religious schools to maintain faith-based hiring and enrollment policies, accusing Labor and the Greens of undermining religious liberty protections.

At the same time, legal scholars and human rights advocates continue to debate how Australia should balance religious freedom with protections against discrimination and hate speech.

Australia’s Constitution provides limited protections for freedom of religion, but critics have long argued the country lacks a comprehensive national bill of rights safeguarding religious expression.

Some legal experts dispute claims that religious liberty is facing a widespread collapse, noting that recent federal hate speech laws remain narrowly focused on incitement to violence rather than ordinary religious expression.

Australia remains a predominantly Christian nation, with the 2021 Census showing about 43.9% of Australians identifying as Christian, though affiliation has steadily declined over recent decades.

The Australian Christian Freedom Index authors say the report is intended to provide a benchmark for tracking religious liberty trends in coming years and to encourage lawmakers to strengthen protections for freedom of belief and speech.
