A Nigerian crochet artist, Elizabeth Jesulade, has come up with a very innovative way to access the Bible. She crocheted a QR code on a ladies’ top that takes a user directly to the YouVersion Bible app when scanned.
The piece features the app’s logo in front and the crocheted QR code design at the back. Some have called the invention deserving of inclusion in the Guiness Book of World Records. Elizabeth’s unique invention has garnered so much attention that it has more than 5 million views on X alone.
She started crocheting in high school and believes that it is her special gift from God. While in college she further experimented with crocheting and managed to sell pieces to earn money. It took her three years before she came up with the unique QR code design. That period was filled with self doubt as she had it in her heart to crochet something unique ” but I didn’t not know exactly what to create. I would say I was surprised on exactly what to work on because I’ve been trying and thinking on what exactly to do. I did not know what it was. I was reading my Bible one day and I went to the Bible Hub because I needed a new translation and something just came to me and I was like, how can I share the Bible? Then it just struck me that you’ve always had the idea of creating a QR code, scheduling and generating a QR code.”
Reflecting on her journey she admits to facing many challenges. The self-taught artist says the major challenge she had to overcome was believing that she actually can crochet. “I felt I wasn’t able to, it was not like I was challenging myself that it’s not possible, I cannot do it and I just had to fight off those thoughts off me because I was really, really scared at some point. I felt like I’m not doing this. Just drop it and just look for something else to work on.” She is proud of herself for soldiering on and creating something that has touched so many lives and is advancing the Kingdom of God.
