A wondrous event is taking place signalling that we could be on the verge of the grand culmination of the ages.
Whereas 2 000 years ago, on the Feast of Pentecost being celebrated this week, 3 000 Jews bowed the knee to Yeshua, their Messiah, there are now an estimated one million Jewish followers of Jesus in the world.
In fact, both Jews and Muslims are coming to Christ more than at any other time in history, according to author Joel Rosenberg, who adds: “This is truly the greatest untold story in the history of the Middle East.”
Pentecost (also known as Shavuot) is a Jewish celebration of the first fruits of the harvest while also commemorating the giving of the Law at Mt Sinai. But the spiritual harvest reaped at the preaching of the Apostle Peter pales by comparison to what is happening today.
A new Lifeway Research survey in America found that 871 000 people of Jewish parentage now embrace Jesus as Messiah.
Rosenberg, of the Joshua Fund, a Christian Zionist organisation, explains: “We’re living in a generation where the scales are coming off the eyes of people (a reference to the Apostle Paul’s Damascus Road conversion, Acts 9:18). The deeper we get into End Times, we should expect more Jews to come to faith in Jesus.”
Hated by world, loved by Jesus
He is referring to biblical promises such as Ezekiel 36:24-26 of an End-Times ingathering of Jews, first to their Land and then to their Saviour when he gives them “a new heart”. They may be hated by the world. But they are loved by Jesus their Messiah.
Muslims, too, are turning to Christ in huge numbers with an estimated four million-plus from Iran alone, according to “Iranian Billy Graham” Hormoz Shariat, who beams the Gospel into his country via satellite “right over the heads of the mullahs”, as Rosenberg puts it, adding: “Despite the greatest persecution of Christians in human history, we are seeing the greatest harvest of human souls in the Muslim world. As sheer savagery has been unleashed in the Middle East, the Spirit of the living God is moving in power and great glory. Satan is on the offensive, to be sure, but so is Christ.”
Joseph Steinberg, CEO of the International Mission to Jewish People, reports that roughly twice as many Jewish people in Israel came to faith last year compared to the previous year1. He tells of Elijah, who has been living on the streets of Tel Aviv, now trusting in Jesus as God is rebuilding his life. In Jerusalem, a retired neurologist immigrant from Russia humbled himself as he “knelt before the Great Physician”, and Charles in Paris found forgiveness at a Shabbat outreach event.
Joseph, who has followed Jesus for over 40 years, says: “God is just as committed to saving Jewish people today as he was when his Son walked the length of Israel and declared to an exclusively Jewish audience: ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but by me’.”
As for the former homeless man in Tel Aviv, Joseph said: “Elijah wasn’t looking for a political solution. He was looking for the peace of God found only in the Messiah.”
So, what’s behind this amazing move that birthed worldwide Christianity and is now coming full circle back to the very people who first passed on the Good News to us Gentiles? It is the power of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit experience (or baptism — see Acts 2:5) which Jesus insisted his disciples should seek before spreading the news of the wonderful reconciliation he brings to the world — first with God and then with each other.
Legendary missionary Lily Gaynor, feeling grossly inadequate after an unsuccessful door-to-door outreach while training at Bible College, afterwards suggested to her companion that perhaps they needed “this baptism of the Spirit that some people talk about”2.
So they retreated (after “lights out”) to an upstairs broom cupboard to seek the “rivers of living water” Jesus promised (John 7:38). And she never looked back. Not only did she become a successful evangelist (for which she had to repent of the sin of pride), but the West African country of Guinea-Bissau is forever in her debt.
We are indeed experiencing another Pentecost, and the gates of hell will not prevail against those whom God has called.
