Life has never been more exciting for stay at home mom, Sibongile Sibeko. This June, she will open for Gaither vocalist, David Phelps’ South African Tour in both Johannesburg and Cape Town. To top it all off, the singer is about to begin recording her debut Gospel album with Brettian Productions and will soon be releasing a music video.
The opera trained, Pretoria based mother caught the attention of both Spirit Music and Brettian Productions after taking first prize in the Radio Pulpit Tehila and Jubilate singing competition in August 2011. The two labels are working together to make her dreams come true. Although it is Brettian Productions who will be releasing her album, it was Spirit Music who invited Sibeko to perform with Phelps.
“When David Phelps was in South Africa with the Gaithers in 2010, I was in the audience” recalls Sibeko. “When he sang Nessun Dorma, I was speechless! His voice was so beautiful. I remember shouting from my seat afterwards: ‘One day I’m going to sing with you David!’ I can’t believe that it is actually now going to happen!”
Says Sibeko “My prayer has always been to bless the Christian community with music, not for entertainment, but to change lives, heal, encourage and lift people’s spirits, connecting them to the Almighty God via a song. Winning the Tehila and Jubilate Competition with Radio Pulpit made all my dreams true. The Lord has heard my cry and I finally will be able to bless the world with the talent God has blessed me with.”
Her four year old son Sibusiso and husband Sipho Sibeko are ready to support Sibongile in her new ventures. Although a music career means time away from home, her family is thrilled at the opportunities that she has been blessed with. Gospel radio and television audiences can expect to start hearing Sibeko as early as July 2012, when a single will be released. A video of the track will also be completed by then.
Phelps and his band will be in Johannesburg on June at the Mosaiek Theatro. Cape Town can enjoy an evening of song on June 30 at His People Cape Town. Tickets are available at Computicket.
