Ramaphosa signs Hate Speech Bill — fight expected to continue in Constitutional Court

Philip Rosenthal discusses the latest Hate Speech Bill development in an interview on Vuma 103fm

Yesterday, President Cyril Ramaphosa signed the Hate Speech Bill as part of a rushed list of bill signings before the elections, reports Philip Rosenthal of ChristianView Network.

“We had asked him not to sign due to unconstitutionality and harm to religious freedom and free speech,” says Rosenthal.

He says: “Certain organisations have indicated they will be taking this bill to the Constitutional Court, where the government will have to defend limiting our rights. The same arguments and information we put to Parliament can also be put to the court.”

The bill has been widely criticised for making “hate speech” a criminal offence, carrying a jail sentence of up to five years but defining the offence vaguely.
