SA-born pastor publishes memoir ‘The Anchor Holds: From Apartheid to Purpose’

South African-born pastor, author, and Bible teacher Joseph Chetty has released a memoir, The Anchor Holds: From Apartheid to Purpose: A Journey of Faith and Grace, a deeply personal account of faith, adversity, ministry, and the sustaining grace of God through more than six decades.

Born in Durban in 1959, Chetty grew up during the apartheid era in a traditional Hindu home. His father was a Hindu priest, and his childhood unfolded against SA’s complex religious, cultural, and racial landscape. His life took a decisive turn when, as a young boy, he embraced the Christian faith — a decision that would ultimately shape his life’s direction.

The Anchor Holds follows Chetty’s journey from his early years in Durban and Chatsworth through his call to Christian ministry, his experiences in SA, and eventually his life and ministry in the United States.

Rather than presenting a life untouched by difficulty, the memoir recounts seasons of struggle, uncertainty, change, and personal testing alongside moments of remarkable opportunity and grace.

“The title The Anchor Holds expresses the central truth that has carried me throughout my life,” Chetty said. “Storms come to every life. Faith does not mean that we escape those storms, but I have discovered that through them all, the anchor holds.”

The memoir also provides readers with a personal window into a changing SA. Chetty writes from the perspective of someone who experienced apartheid firsthand, while the larger story reaches beyond politics and geography to examine questions of faith, calling, family, purpose, and perseverance.

Now living in Colorado, Chetty has spent much of his life in Christian ministry and teaching. Through The Anchor Holds, he hopes readers facing their own seasons of uncertainty will be encouraged by the testimony of a life in which circumstances changed repeatedly, but faith remained the constant anchor.

“This is not simply the story of where I have been,” Chetty said. “My hope is that someone reading it will recognise that their own story is not finished. There is purpose beyond the difficult chapters of life.”
