Research provides convincing evidence that only fully-engaged people deliver outstanding results on a sustainable basis.

Lead With Intent authored by South African organisational behaviour consultant, pastor and lecturer Hermann du Plessis, is a profound yet easy read that reveals nine leadership principles and practices that drive engagement in the workplace.

The impact of these leadership principles is a business culture that unleashes and grows the potential in any organisation. When a leader follows these principles and practices intentionally, engagement is raised which drives performance and serves all stakeholders.

“Fully engaged people accept responsibility as they feel that they belong, are respected, trusted and appreciated,” says Du Plessis. “In my 16 years of guiding leaders, I have never met a leader that excels in relationships and results who does not subscribe to the godly concept of servant leadership.

“Often these leaders are not Christians. They may not realise it at first but, as we discuss the theory of servant leadership, they always identify with it strongly.”

Godly servant Leaders believe God has given them a responsibility towards their people, that God loves all people, and that they therefore have to lead with great care and awareness of the privilege inherent in leading God’s people, writes Du Plessis.

Drawing from his corporate and church experience as well as his in-depth knowledge of leadership literature and the Bible, the book unpacks nine leadership principles and practices that are rooted in servant leadership as perfectly portrayed by Jesus during his time on earth.

Servant leadership is not a soft and fluffy approach where leaders fear being taken advantage of or having the responsibility of becoming their employees’ psychologist, counsellor or even slave.

“On the contrary, it is an intentional approach by leaders that creates a culture where employees begin to volunteer their intelligence, energy, loyalty and contribution,” adds Du Plessis. “Intentional leaders refuse to serve a system that reduces human beings to mere objects of profit generation.”

Apart from Du Plessis implementing these practical principles successfully alongside the executives in corporates and SMEs that have seen their profitability double in three years, a division in a significant financial institution operating in 19 countries has seen a 93% customer satisfaction rating and a 97% engagement rating.
