Charl Marajh, a South African developer, has launched the Berean App, an AI-powered Bible study and theological research application designed to help Christians explore Scripture and better understand the views of other believers. The app was created with a vision that goes beyond simply providing answers to Bible questions.
“The Berean App is designed to help unite Christian believers by helping them understand one another. Christians from different denominations and traditions can sometimes interpret certain passages and theological subjects differently. The goal of the Berean App is not to force users into one particular viewpoint, but to encourage believers to explore Scripture, ask questions and better understand why other Christians may hold different views,” says Marajh.
The app takes its name from the Bereans mentioned in Acts 17:11, who examined the Scriptures to test what they were taught.
Combining faith and technology
The Berean App uses artificial intelligence to assist users with Bible study and theological research. The platform includes AI-powered Bible study and Scripture context tools, Bible quizzes, reading plans, personal reflections, biblical maps, Hebrew and Greek insights, sermon-related features and other resources for exploring Scripture.
The structured Bible Study feature can generate sections including:
- Key Verses
- Observations
- Reflection Questions
- Discussion Questions
- Practical Applications
- Prayer Points
- Next Study Suggestions
The app also includes the complete 66-book KJV Bible, Ethiopian Canon resources and tools for exploring biblical history and geography. “The aim is not to replace pastors, theologians or personal Bible study, but to give users additional tools to help them explore and understand Scripture,” says Marajh.
Multilingual support
One of the key features of the Berean App is its multilingual support. The full user interface and AI responses are available in nine languages:
- English
- Afrikaans
- isiZulu
- isiXhosa
- Sesotho
- Portuguese
- Spanish
- French
- Swahili
Users can select their preferred language and receive AI-generated responses in that language, helping make the application more accessible to people who may not primarily study or communicate in English.
Technology behind the app
The Berean App was built using modern mobile and cloud technologies, including React Native, Expo and TypeScript. Its backend infrastructure uses Supabase and PostgreSQL, with authentication, secure storage, database services and serverless Edge Functions.
The app also uses secure backend processing for AI requests, helping keep private AI provider credentials away from the mobile application. The application includes security measures such as authentication, database-level Row Level Security and secure storage for sensitive session data.
Faster AI-powered study
Marajh says the development of the app also involved optimising how complex AI tasks are processed. For selected features, independent tasks can be processed in parallel rather than waiting for each section to be completed one after another.
According to the developer’s internal testing, this has resulted in significant performance improvements in features such as Scripture Context and Bible Study Mode. The goal is to allow users to receive detailed, structured study material without unnecessarily long waiting times.
A personal journey
Marajh says the Berean App represents a long journey of learning, development and problem-solving. Building and launching a production mobile application required working with mobile development, artificial intelligence, cloud infrastructure, databases, authentication, security and Google Play’s application publishing process.
The app was developed as an independent project using modern development tools and cloud platforms. What began as an idea eventually became a fully operational application available to users through Google Play.
The app is now available on Google Play. Website: www.berean.co.za
