SA Prayer networks call for ‘desperate prayer’ for nation

Intercessors for South Africa (IFSA), which represents various SA prayer networks has called on the Body of Christ to participate in 21 days of night-and-day prayer and fasting for the nation from Sunday May 19 to Sunday June 9.

The so-called “Awaken SA” initiative [see prayer guide], which launches 10 days before South Africans go to the polls on May 29, will focus on awakening the Church, godly government and restoring society, says IFSA.

Explaining its motivation for the urgent call to prayer, IFSA says: “The ever increasing-violence, immorality and corruption in our nation in recent years remain a concern to many. It is said that 80% of the population of South Africa professes to be Christian, but society does not reflect the fruit of the Gospel. Even as our nation prepares itself to vote for a new government on the 29th of May 2024, many feel desperate and hopeless that things will change.

“William Booth, Founder of the Salvation Army, had this to say about our generation: ‘I consider that the chief dangers which confront the coming century will be religion without the Holy Ghost, Christianity without Christ, forgiveness without repentance, salvation without regeneration, politics without God, and heaven without hell.’

“This is a call for desperate prayer for our nation. Desperate prayer comes when we face reality at the point where, humanly possible, there is no way out but God.”

AWAKEN SA prayer options

IFSA urges SA Christians to consider the following options for participating in the Awaken SA campaign:

Corporate Prayer Gatherings — Consider hosting one corporate prayer gathering every week in your local church or community. (Video: Why pray?)

24-7 Praying Churches — Consider having a 24-7 Prayer Chain with 24 believers praying every hour of the same day as your corporate gathering. Register your church/group here: https://tinyurl.com/AWAKENSA

Fasting and Prayer — We invite every believer to fast and pray during these 21 days. Consider skipping one meal per day. (Article: Fasting and prayer – a biblical discipline)
