The May 29 General Elections signalled a fundamental shift in South Africa’s political landscape. The ANC lost its 30-year majority in Parliament and coalition government became a reality. The official opposition also changed hands when the DA joined the Government of National Unity (GNU).
However, the country’s shifting political landscape is still in progress. It appears more change is on the horizon with the resignation of Floyd Shivambu from the EFF. Shivambu’s defection to the MK party — along with others — will hasten the EFF’s decline.
The real reasons for Shivambu’s defection to Jacob Zuma’s MK party has generated much speculation. However, the MK party has clearly established itself as the new home-base for SA’s self-styled “revolutionaries” — judging by the shady characters its attracted so far.
The MK party is built around the personality cult of Jacob Zuma just like the EFF is built around the personality cult of Julius Malema. The problem with this is that Jacob Zuma is facing hundreds of charges of corruption and fraud — and likewise Malema and Shivambu.
Zuma faces the very real prospect of imprisonment next year. Malema and Shivambu’s involvement in the VBS Bank heist could potentially see them join Zuma in prison. If both the MK and EFF lose its cult leaders, the parties will collapse into in-fighting and chaos.
In the 2009 General Elections, ANC breakaway, the Congress of the People (COPE) won 36 seats in Parliament. But as a result of bitter in-fighting it was reduced to three seats in the 2014 Elections and none in 2024. I predict, a post-Zuma MK party will follow a similar pattern.
The MK party recently fired 15 MP’s just weeks after being sworn in. Apparently, several individuals implicated in State Capture will replace the ousted MP’s — reinforcing the party’s “rogue gallery” status. MK’s primary goal appears to be defeating the GNU to specifically capture control of state power to enrich its cadres.
If this sound familiar its because MK, like the EFF, are ANC castaways. And it’s where they learned the art of using positions of power — not to serve — but to loot state coffers for their own nefarious ends. I believe both the EFF and MK will fizzle out in the next few years.
Political parties established around personalities of cult with no real vision to develop a capable state to serve the people of SA — cannot survive for long. Both MK and the EFF are led by megalomaniacs with a pathological pursuit of prestige, power and vengeance.
Significantly, however, these pseudo “revolutionaries” face multiple charges of corruption, theft, fraud and money-laundering. The NPA’s investigations into the VBS heist and other crimes that involve current and former ANC officials will see many successful prosecutions.
More good news in the fight to end corruption in South Africa is that the NPA’s Investigating Directorate Against Corruption was granted permanent status after a five year wait.
This bodes well for South Africa’s future. The ANC is on a downward trajectory. As more former and current public officials are successfully prosecuted, coalition government will consist of political parties that take voter concerns seriously and will perform accordingly.
Leaders of political parties serving in the GNU are aware their performance is being monitored by the electorate. Their future success and growth therefore depend on outperforming incompetent colleagues to grab the attention of corruption weary voters.
The GNU has fundamentally transformed South African politics for the better. It currently consists of 10 political parties with its leaders in key positions to impress the electorate. The ANC is aware it is being outperformed and is desperately trying to catch up.
And while leaders in the GNU outperform each other – and improve governance as a consequence – the opposition “progressive” caucus will cannibalize itself in its quest for power, prestige, and self-enrichment. Because where there is no vision, people perish.
