Coco, a member of Saint John Missionary Baptist Church in Florida, has never shied away from sharing her faith.

After lifting the trophy, she said: “First, I would like to thank God for always keeping me covered… A lot of dark thoughts, and just the fact that I stayed to it just means a lot to be here.”

She later posted on social media: “Thank you God and thank you everyone… Never give up on your dreams.”

Gauff had previously reached the French Open final in 2022 but lost to Iga Swiatek, a match she described as “crushing”.

Reflecting on the difference this time, she said: “I was crying like before the match [in 2022] and like so nervous… and then obviously, the US Open happened.”

Her breakthrough win came in New York in 2023 where she also made headlines for kneeling in prayer after her victory.
