Time for a catch up — Vivienne Solomons

We live in an age where for most of us, everything must be scheduled. Including time spent with those we love.

The other evening, my younger brother and I had a long overdue catch up. We message each other on WhatsApp at least once a week. But we haven’t spoken in a while. And we haven’t seen each other in person for almost three years as he lives in the United Kingdom.

Although we had kept saying that we must make some time to chat, there always seemed to be something more important to do. Until the other evening when we decided to just make the call and set time aside to prioritise our relationship.

So, for almost two hours, the world stopped, and we just enjoyed one another’s company. We reminisced. We laughed and we cried, and we spoke about our hopes for the future.

There is something so special and so comforting about a relationship that has stood the test of time and the challenges of life. Whether that relationship is with a spouse, a sibling, or a friend.

The value such relationships bring to our lives cannot be measured but is often overlooked in the day-to-day busyness of life. How many times do we think to reach out and make contact with someone only to be distracted and then forget? Until we have time. Another day perhaps.

But what I have learned first-hand in the last three years is that life is not only fragile, it is also fleeting and that we do eventually run out of time with the people that we love. There will always be a reason not to but there really isn’t a better time to invest in our relationships than right now.

So, I encourage you to pick up the ‘phone, send that text and spend time with those you love. You won’t regret it and it will add far more to your life than the sacrifice it takes to show up in that person’s life.

Who will you catch up with today?
