Time to show compassion — Angus Buchan

One of the characteristics of our beloved Lord Jesus Christ is His heart for each one of us, He has extreme compassion on all men. If we look at the Gospel of Mark 8:2 the Lord says: “I have compassion on the multitude because they have now continued with me three days and have had nothing to eat.

He was concerned about the wellbeing of the multitudes and that is what I love about Him so much. I looked up in the Oxford Dictionary to find out the exact meaning of the word compassion, and it is “sympathetic pity and concern for the sufferings of other people”.

Yes, it’s kindness that the world needs in these troubled times; it is to be concerned about one another; it is totally opposite to the attitude of the world which is “I’m alright, Jack, and do whatever you have to do to make sure your life is well preserved”. Such a contrast with Jesus, who says: “If a man must follow me, he must deny himself, take up his cross daily and follow me.

Jesus shows compassion to His disciples

John 21:9 speaks of a time after Jesus had been resurrected from the dead and He told the angels to tell the disciples: “I’ll meet them at Lake Galilee“. Remember Peter, the big fisherman, and all the rest went fishing — they had basically given up their vision, their dream. Their expectation had been dashed when the Master had been crucified, and yet, after having fished all night and caught nothing, they came to land because Jesus had told them to throw the net on the right hand side of the boat and they pulled up no less than 153 fish. Jesus had already prepared a breakfast for each one of them. He had made a fire, he had laid fish on the coals, he had even made bread. And He said: “Come and eat.” What compassion, what incredible compassion, and this is what you and I need to exercise in the year 2025.

Jesus bless you
