WATCH: Dangers of state regulation of religion

Religious institutions in South Africa still enjoy a high degree of religious autonomy. But in a disturbing trend, various democracies in Africa are currently facing pressure to impose state regulation of religion and some states have already done so. Several years ago, after some widely-reported cases of pastors abusing their followers, the CRL Rights Commission pushed for state regulation of the religious sector. Freedom of Religion South Africa (FOR SA) played a key part in opposing the CRL proposal. In this video, FOR SA head of legal Liesl Pretorius and executive director Michael Swain discuss why it is vital — from a religious freedom, democratic and constititional perspective — to preserve religious autonomy in SA.
