Freedom of Religion South Africa (FOR SA) has been looking into concerns raised by members of the faith and academic communities regarding the Critical Social Justice and Citizenship module offered at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN).

This compulsory module appears to promote a one-sided and contested view of sex and gender, says FOR SA in a news alert about video [see below] posted on its virtual roadshow where it shares updates on current threats to religious freedom in South Africa.

“We explore why the compulsory nature of the module raises serious questions about religious freedom, freedom of expression, and academic freedom — and whether it allows space for critical thinking or amounts to ideological indoctrination,” says the alert.

FOR SA says it has formally engaged with UKZN, requesting access to the full content of the compulsory module and proposing a respectful, pluralistic alternative. It says the university’s response has, however, been dismissive, leaving us to consider next steps.

“This issue also echoes broader concerns about ideological bias in public education, as seen in tools like the ECE Toolkit — challenging our nation’s commitment to true inclusivity, diversity, and democratic freedoms,” says FOR SA.
