The relaxation of numerical restrictions on religious gatherings announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa last night has been welcomed by Freedom of Religion SA, says Advocate Nadene Badenhorst, legal counsel to FOR SA.
The new rules, which become effective at midnight on Sunday, permit places of worship to accommodate people up to 50% of their building capacity with a maximum of 250 people indoors and 500 outdoors.
While the new regulations are good news for smaller institutions, they bring “no relief whatsoever” for bigger churches and other places of worship and are unfair and don’t make any sense, she says.
