WATCH: Video of the Week — Voting is child’s play

Well, the dust is settling over South Africa’s hotly contested local government elections and whatever the outcome we as followers of Jesus Christ can rest assured that He is ultimately in control and that each one of us has a part to play in reflecting Him well in the places that God has put us.

The video clip below — of an election that took place at a Port Elizabeth pre-primary school, the day before the local government polls — caught my eye this week and so I decided to post it in our fortnightly Video of the Week slot.

Hats off to The Capstone School for this imaginative bit of early voter education. The kids had an opportunity to vote for Sylvester the Cat who wants dress up day on a Friday, or for Ernest the Elephant who wants to move the slide to outside Sue’s class. Sylvester the Cat Won.

Judging by some of the confusion around whether votes for small parties split votes or not, we adults in South Africa could do with some voter education.

I love the joy and innocence — and in some cases earnestness — reflected in the Sylvester-Ernest poll, and I trust that after the results were announced everybody accepted the outcome graciously and is co-operating with Sylvester.

The clip also reminds us that we as sons and daughters of the living God have a great responsibility to teach our young ones in the ways of the Lord — Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it. — Proverbs 22:6. Let’s introduce them to God’s word and prayer at an early age and let them see Christ in us — love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

And let’s learn from the little ones — And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” — Matthew 18:3. Let’s walk in childlike faith, declaring and expectantly standing on God’s promises.
