Earlier this week I went to bed without realising that in just a few short hours, my tooth, which had never given me a problem, and which hadn’t even been filled, would wake me up in the middle of the night with throbbing pain.
After taking some pain medication (which only took the edge off) and waiting until a reasonable hour, I contacted my dentist to see if she could fit me in that morning.
Once we established by means of x-ray that there was an underlying abscess and, in addition, that the tooth’s nerve was now dead, then discussed possible treatment plans, I naively thought that it would be ‘downhill’ from there. You know – the pain would be gone within a few hours of taking the antibiotics and stronger painkillers, I would then return to have the root canal and follow it up with having a crown fitted. Done. Inconvenient and uncomfortable, maybe but done. Wrong!
That night, the pain increased and became so unbearable that I needed an emergency room injection just so that I could sleep. And still I believed that the next day the pain would subside. But the next day, I needed two injections administered by my husband, just to function. Who would have thought? Not me.
While an abscess and the pain it caused was dictating how I felt and how I functioned, it occurred to me that I take not only my health but so many other things in my life for granted.
We plan our lives around things happening as they should, when they should. In other words, we take certain things for granted, without even a second thought or a moment’s hesitation. And there is nothing wrong with doing so – we would be living fear and anxiety driven lives, otherwise.
My point is this: Why does it come so naturally to us to expect life to go according to plan but we often find it difficult to believe that God is who He says He is and that He will do what He says He will do?
There is so much we take for granted in life but when it comes to God and His Word, we often hesitate or struggle to bring God into our situation.
It came so naturally to me to believe that the dentist would diagnose the problem correctly, prescribe an effective antibiotic to reduce the abscess and recommend an appropriate treatment plan for my situation.
But to my shame, I only turned to God for His help when events didn’t go according to plan, knowing that I needed His wisdom and guidance to bring the relief I so desperately needed.
I am reminded of the Scriptures in Deuteronomy 31: 6-8 and Hebrews 13:5 where it is written that the Lord will never leave us nor forsake us. In fact, He is always with us, and ready to help us in times of need – no matter when we decide to invite Him into our situation!
Even after all these years of walking with the Lord as my Saviour, I am still learning to bring Him front and centre into my life here on earth every single day.
I encourage you to do the same – nothing and no one compares to Him.
