Faith Hope Love Ministries, a private Christian outreach, feeds more than 300 children per week in Greenbushes, Port Elizabeth. Founder, Bernadette Spies, and her team go out to bless the Greenbushes community by sharing God’s word, leading praise and worship and sharing a meal together.
In 2007 the organisation was birthed after a heart-wrenching encounter with the people on Mission Road Greenbushes, “My heart broke as I saw the poverty my brothers and sisters were living in”, Spies said. “Initially we started out with one small bucket of soup which fed 10 people, today we are able to reach 400 people through the grace of God”, shares Spies.
Even after losing her job in 2009, Spies stood in the gap and continued to give whatever she had to this community.
“I remember one morning in particular, all we had was a pack of macaroni, one packet of soup mix and water. I said to Patricia, my best friend, ‘today God is going to turn this watery mixture into thick creamy soup’, and that’s exactly what the Lord done”, Spies adds.
Spies had left her home that morning with three 25 litre buckets of watery soup. After praise and worship, they prayed over the soup and began to serve the soup in faith. “The Lord had turned the water based soup into thick creamy tasting soup”, she laughs.
Spies funds the feeding project out of her own pocket and has seen the Lord’s favour time and again. Her faith and heart for God’s people challenges us as Christians to get out of our comfort zones and get cracking with the work of the Lord.
Today, Faith Hope Love ministries reaches more than 300 children and 70 adults per week.
