Youth-founded academy helping Soweto learners with maths, science

Soweto learners display their certificates of excellence for maths and science awarded by Intsika Academy at a recent fundraising event

Nelisile Hlatshwayo. a Grade 9 learner from Moletsane Secondary School, Vosloorus, recently walked out of her mathematics examination classroom confident about her results.

She attributes her positivity to the coaching she received from a local NPO, Intsika Academy, that identifies learners in the Soweto area who are struggling with maths and physical science and assists them with a range of learning methods.

Gateway News spoke to Nthethelo Mchunu, a youth member of the Apostolic Faith Mission of Africa church in Pimville, who co-founded Instika, in 2019, together with Sabelo Mnyanda and Siyabonga Blessing Hlatshwayo.

He said the learners they help come from different backgrounds. They especially target those with slow learning abilities.

”We are called to be the light of the world, and to make a positive impact in our communities. Intsika Academy is one other way to impact positively in our environment and community.

“This is what motivated us to start the academy to help our youth to do well in their studies. If they lose interest and drop out due to failures, crime and other social ills increase in our communities. That also increases poverty as the unemployment rate will increase as well.

“Christian youth have the potential to be powerful agents of positive change in their communities. As young people, they possess a unique perspective and energy that can be harnessed to make a difference in the world.

“As Intsika Academy we want to help them navigate the challenges they face with grace and wisdom,” Ntsikelelo said.

Intsika Academy recently hosted a fundraising award ceremony for mathematics and physical science learners they have been coaching throughout the year. Learners were awarded with certificates of excellence.

“Our vision is to elevate the standard of education offered to elementary and high school pupils, to eradicate the negative stigma associated with academia typically in mathematics and physical science.” Ntethelelo said.

He said: “Our goal is to grow and become one of the biggest academies in South Africa, competing internationally and being renowned and trusted for our work and standard of education. Also, we want to increase and maintain high pass rates in local schools and raise the standard of teaching and learning in the South African education system.”

Other Christian youth members who serve various roles in Intsika Academy are Thubelihle Ncube, Kagiso Mokori and Thuli Nguqu. The academy also gave an opportunity for learners to be taught during winter school break and also participated in the Nelson Mandela 67 minutes by providing free extra coaching.
