Islamic State Mozambique (IS-M) have claimed the killing of 17 Christians in Cabo Delgado Province in the past three weeks.

In just one attack in Muidumbe district on 26 August, the terrorists murdered four people and burned down 29 houses.

These attacks are part of an escalation in violence in Cabo Delgado, including skirmishes between IS-M and troops from Mozambique and Rwanda engaged in counterinsurgency operations.

In early August international experts reported that 60 000 people had been displaced by the violence.

More than half a million had already fled northern Cabo Delgado since the Islamist insurgency began in 2017.

IS-M has also set up roadblocks to prevent the delivery of humanitarian aid to the region. Travellers are being intercepted and, if they are Christians, charged a tax of around £125-£385 (R2 913 to R8 972) to be allowed to continue their journey.

These killings are only the latest act of violence perpetrated by IS-M. In July six Christians from the village of Natocua, Ancuabe district, were beheaded.

IS-M was praised in the Islamic State (IS – also known as ISIS, ISIL, Daesh) online magazine Al Naba at the beginning of August along with a demand for Christians to convert to Islam, accept subjugation by IS or face death.
