Beyond the ballot box — Vivienne Solomons

This week, as citizens across South Africa stepped into the polling booths for the 2026 municipal elections, the atmosphere in our local communities was charged with competing promises, political debates, and heavy expectations.

National elections often capture high-profile headlines, but municipal elections strike right at the heart of our daily lives — our local roads, water security, power infrastructure, street lighting, and neighbourhood safety.

For followers of Christ, elections present more than just a civic duty; they offer an opportunity to reflect on stewardship, governance, and what it truly means to love our neighbours in concrete, practical ways.

Here are a few of my reflections having been inspired to vote for the first time in many years:

1. Local governance is neighbour-care

It is easy to view political involvement as disconnected from spiritual life. Yet local government directly impacts our daily flourishing as people. When water flows reliably, when trash is collected, when streetlights illuminate dark roads, and when primary healthcare facilities run efficiently, vulnerable members of our society – the elderly, the sick, and impoverished families—experience dignity and relief.

In Jeremiah 29:7, God instructed the exiles in Babylon to “seek the peace and prosperity of the city… Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.”

Voting in a municipal election is one direct way to seek the peace of our towns, cities, and local wards. When we vote not merely out of self-interest, but with an eye toward how decisions affect the least among us, civic participation transforms into an act of love for our neighbour.

2. Discerning character and servant leadership

Political campaigns can easily overwhelm us with noise, rhetoric, and grand declarations. Scripture calls us to exercise spiritual discernment when evaluating leaders.

In Proverbs 29:2, we are reminded that “when the righteous thrive, the people rejoice; when the wicked rule, the people groan.” Biblical leadership is defined fundamentally by service rather than self-enrichment or ambition. As I reviewed candidates in my ward, the key questions I considered were:

  • Integrity: Does this candidate or party demonstrate transparency, honesty, and accountability?
  • Track record: Have they demonstrated a genuine commitment to public service and community improvement in the past?
  • Stewardship: Will they manage local municipal resources responsibly to ensure basic service delivery for all?

Choosing life and flourishing for our communities means electing leaders who see authority not as a tool for personal gain, but as a solemn responsibility to serve the public good.

3. Maintaining unity beyond the polling booth

Elections have a way of heightening divisions within society and, at times, within the Church. Political opinions, policy preferences, and party loyalties vary widely — even among believers sitting in the same pew.

Even as we participate in democracy, our ultimate identity should remain rooted in Christ. Our mandate as believers is to model civil discourse, grace, and unity. Winning an argument or supporting a winning candidate should never come at the expense of Christian unity, charity, or truth.

After the votes are tallied, the important work of local community building continues. Good governance requires active, engaged citizens who are willing to hold elected officials accountable, support local community initiatives, build bridges across divides, and pray regularly for those in authority (1 Timothy 2:1–2).

As I cast my vote on Wednesday, I did so with a prayerful heart: asking God for wisdom, seeking the welfare of my city, and resolving to remain an active voice for justice, integrity, and grace long after the election banners come down.

Regardless of the election outcome, our ultimate hope does not rest in municipal councils or political alliances. It rests in God, who calls us to be salt and light in every corner of society.
