St Josephs Intermediate Paediatric Care, a specialised transitional healthcare facility in Montana, Cape Town, is celebrating 90 years of pioneering paediatric transitional healthcare this year.

Founded in 1935 by the German Pallottine Sisters, St Josephs serves children from South Africa’s most vulnerable communities. Today, a team of 139 professionals — including nurses, therapists, care workers, a medical doctor, and essential operations staff — work together to provide holistic, life-changing care to families in need.

With a strong Christian heritage, the treatment at St Joseph’s is delivered in the spirit of Christian love and devotion. The facility is dedicated to providing free care in a nurturing, loving environment infused with Christian compassion. St Josephs is also home to a circular chapel, which serves as a “beacon of faith and hope for the sisters, staff, and children alike”.

St Josephs

“For nine decades, St Josephs has been a beacon of hope for thousands of children requiring transitional medical care,” says Lesley Liddle, Business Development Manager at St Josephs. “Our work would not be possible without the incredible support from donors, partners, and the broader community.”

Legacy of impact and care

Guided by a board of directors who are specialists in transitional care and business, St Josephs continues to serve as a bridge between hospital and home for children with complex medical needs and challenging home lives. The organisation provides comprehensive care, ensuring that children receive the medical, therapeutic, and emotional support required for their recovery.

“The model of care that St Josephs provides as a bridge from hospital to home for medically-fragile children, at no cost to the families, is remarkable and quite unique in our country,” says Sue Boucher, Programme Manager at PatchSA. “The valuable role that St Josephs fills within the Western Cape healthcare system cannot be overstated.”

“The generosity of so many South Africans has shaped our past, sustains our present, and secures our future,” says Liddle. “Together, we can continue offering life-changing care to children who need it most.”
