Angel Studios’ Sound of Freedom was the No. 1 movie at the box office in the United Stated on Independence Day, July 4.

The film, led by Passion of the Christ star Jim Caviezel, brought in $14.24 million (R267,4 million}in total ticket sales on its opening day, beating out its closest competitor, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, which brought in $11.69 million.

This noteworthy achievement can be attributed to the combined success of direct box office sales and Angel Studios’ “Pay It Forward” option, which allows moviegoers to purchase tickets for others in advance. The feature generated an additional $2.68 million in ticket sales for Sound of Freedom leading up to July 4.

“Thanks to fans around the country, Sound of Freedom earned the top spot as America’s number one movie on Independence Day,” said Neal Harmon, CEO of Angel Studios. “We’ve received numerous messages telling us theatres are either packed or sold out. This movie has now taken on a life of its own to become something more than that, a grassroots movement.”

The film reportedly earned nearly all of its budget back on its opening day.

Sound of Freedom tells the true story of Tim Ballard (Caviezel), a former federal agent who embarks on a life-altering mission to rescue children from the clutches of sex traffickers. Inspired by real events, the film unveils the deceptive tactics employed by traffickers to abduct vulnerable children, drawing from Ballard’s own experiences combating human trafficking both as a federal agent and through his organisation, Operation Underground Railroad.

The movie chronicles Ballard’s decision to abandon his government job after encountering a young boy and his sister who had been kidnapped in Honduras. Driven by a deep sense of purpose, he sets out on a dangerous journey to save innocent lives, ultimately liberating 123 individuals, including 55 children, in a single daring mission conducted in the Colombian jungle.
