Christian hip-hop artist Hulvey announced he was cancelling the show on Friday October 16, roughly an hour before doors opened, after discovering sexually explicit images and objects inside the venue.
The rapper, who recently won a GMA Dove Award for Rap/Hip-Hop Album of the Year for Could Be Tonight, said he first learned of the décor when he arrived for a VIP meet-and-greet. He addressed fans outside the building and later posted updates on social media.
According to Hulvey, the show was originally booked in a smaller room, but strong ticket sales prompted organisers to move it to a larger space within the same complex. He said his team was not told about the change or about what the new room contained.
“ I had a sold-out show in Amsterdam; I was an hour from going on stage. We had people walking into the venue, and on the walls of this venue were extremely, extremely graphic images to the point that I cannot say what they were,” he stated on social media.
“And not only graphic images, but there are explicit objects in the venue that people saw. I was meeting seven-year-old fans at the meet and greet, and there are tons of kids outside,” he said.
“I am not okay with people seeing what were on those walls, and the type of things that they could be exposed to at a Christian concert would not be okay to me.
“I stand for Jesus only,” he told the crowd gathered outside. He added that if the decision cost him a show, he did not mind.
Hulvey said churches and other venues had contacted him offering their facilities.
In a follow-up video, he said the cancellation had opened doors for conversations about faith in the city and encouraged fans in the Netherlands to use the moment to point people to Christ.
Ticketing details for the rescheduled performance had not been announced at the time of publication.
